I may be way off base here, but I don’t remember so much news coverage surrounding the start of the next presidential election in the US? Two years away and it’s already in the news every night? What’s up with that? We just finished an election (which produced what will probably be gridlock in the government for the next two years) and we’re already talking about the next election two years from now? Sounds like an obsession – or maybe just a slow news period.

Don’t get me wrong – as a proponent of limited government, I see gridlock in the government as a good thing. It would be better if the government willing started to shrink itself and stop being so invasive, but since that’s never going to happen, gridlock means they won’t make a whole lot of progress in growing themselves. I just don’t get this fascination we (or more correctly, the media believes we) have with the presidential election lately that we have to be caught up in who is leading in the polls before the candidates have even been decided. They are getting a lot of mileage out of forming “exploratory committees” though.
