I was talking with a friend from England the other day. He runs a service business over there, and we discussed him opening the same type of business over here. The problem is the state of our immigration policy. If he has to compete with companies that hire illegal immigrants, his costs will be higher than his competitors because he intends to obey the law and pay minimum wage – what a reward for obeying the law! He’s suddenly not competitive, because his competitors hire illegals that they don’t report and don’t pay taxes on (it is a janitorial service). Say what you will about immigration reform, but I think this is a key issue – the current system legitimizes unfair competition and unlawful advantages, so whether you legitimize everyone or no one, something has to be done… Just my two cents.
